I’m not comfortable sticking around in crowds right now so I’m never down there long, but it is much changed even since I last walked through on my way downtown two days ago. It feels much more organized and pretty impressively focused.
*The intersection at 12th and Pine is no longer totally obstructed. Barriers are now neatly lined to demarcate sections of the area, paths now created for through traffic, complete with newly installed speed bumps on the street.
*There are separated sections in the area, for people of color to speak (in front of the East Precinct Station, its entrance once again totally obstructed); a “Decolonization Conversation Cafe” (not really sure what to make of that one); a “Defund SPD” booth and a “CHOP Legal” booth, the latter two more recent additions.
*The “No Cop Co-op” appears to have an expanded produce section. There are flyers for a nearby mobile COVID testing site. I saw at least three volunteers picking up litter, clearly part of an effort to make the whole area less cluttered and more neatly organized.
*The Cuff Complex, the gay nightclub that exists within CHOP boundaries, now has a collage of “queer black pioneers” and black trans women on its outside wall, with the always-vital reminder that Pride was a protest.
