in the mist
I thought about going to a movie yesterday after work, and even had one on my calendar, but I have since moved it to after work today—it's just as well, because I'll need to leave work half an hour early to attend the showtime I want, and that really wasn't in the cards yesterday as my work day was too busy. Also, Ivan hasn't had a chance to watch anything with me in several days, and so when I got home from work yesterday, with more than an hour until Shobhit was to get off work, I suggested we watch this new nature docuseries on Netflix called Penguin Town. We watched three episodes, both of us like it and want to keep watching, and there are another five episodes to go. We even discussed other nature docuseries on Netflix we'll watch together afterward, particularly one about nocturnal animals called Night on Earth. It does sound very cool.
It sounds like Ivan and I may walk to a city park neither of us have been to but he somehow recently discovered, sometime soon, although I'm not certain yet when that will happen. He did finally get the phone call yesterday confirming he has the job at Foss, the assisted living facility in North Seattle that was at the top of his list. He's got an orientation this afternoon and is assuming he'll start shifts this week itself. He still prefers graveyard shifts, something I will never understand—well, I suppose except that it does mean most of the residents are asleep through most of his shift, so presumably he doesn't get super busy. I'm sure that within a few months he'll be bitching to me about some bitch or another that he works with, as is part of the usual cycle. But for now, he seems to feel they are all very nice and he's excited and relieved. Also, we have a guaranteed rental income now for the foreseeable future.
Hmm, what else can I tell you about today? We had a Grocery / Category Management meeting this morning, something Beth in Category Management has attempted to hold weekly for ages, and we had a smattering of them over Zoom over the past year and a half. This morning we were all of us in one of the conference rooms, with the one exception of Eric, who still patched in from home over Microsoft Teams.
I was the first one in there, and then a bunch of the rest of the group arrived together a minute or two later. Tracy, who sits behind me, complained about my not saying anything to her when I got up to go to the conference room (we had to go to one over near the front desk because the one next to my desk was occupied), and then she went on to complain about how often I just get up to go to lunch without inviting her. I said, "You know I have lunch at noon every day. I'm not your babysitter!" I was joking around, which was clear to everyone . . . hopefully. I have had some examples lately of how people who don't know me very well yet are uncertain about how I seem to be behaving. So that's still a thing with me, apparently.
I made macaroni and cheese for lunch today, which meant I had to go to the kitchen several minutes earlier than I usually do—so that I would still be sitting down to eat at noon. I texted Tracy from my phone: HEY it's almost lunch time! She replied back, Is that an invite?? I'm honored
Anyway. She actually didn't have any lunch to eat today—a relatively regular occurrence, which is precisely why I don't always announce to her that I'm breaking for lunch—but she came and joined me anyway. We sat at one of the tables out on the patio; the temperature was about 63° and it was mostly cloudy so it was kind of barely warm enough.
Speaking of the weather, I found myself caught unawares this morning on my bike, in mist! I had checked the weather app on my phone before leaving and it said nothing about precipitation, but then I found myself in a bit of wetness when I got the bike out of the garage. It had literally been weeks, maybe even months, since I last saw any precipitation whatsoever in Seattle, so it was almost jarring. It was still warm enough this morning that I wasn't cold riding through it, although it did make my shirt and pants a bit damp. Strangely, it was quite misty on Capitol Hill, then totally dry as I rode through downtown (actually helpful, so I didn't get totally soaked), then misty again by the time I was reaching the north end of Belltown. I guess we measured "trace" precipitation today and may again tomorrow morning. It'll be totally dry again for my ride home after work, no doubt.
Even though it precludes the bike commute, I would sure be delighted to see a genuine rainfall again. We desperately need it. But, I'll probably be saying that now most years for the rest of my life.
