I spent most of my evening last night with Tracy, going to see The Woman King with her, so she could finally see it as I already saw it in September 17, but she as in Las Vegas at the time. I loved it enough that I told her I would happily see it again, and so, I did.

I still stand by my A-minus grade, even though a second watch made it a lot easier to see the many plot contrivances and tropes of that movie. But, as I said to Tracy after the movie ended, what makes that movie great is in the details.

Side note: I've said many times that I continue to wear a mask in movie theaters. It's nice that Tracy is one of the few people who does too (except when she's eating or drinking her purchased concessions, anyway). We met at the AMC in the U District (formerly known as Sundance Cinemas, formerly known as Landmark Theaters U District), and since the movie is now in its third week, it was in one of the smaller screening rooms: maybe eight rows of six seats each. Still, the house was filled to nearly half capacity, at least as it appeared. And while there may have been two or three other people in there also wearing masks, I didn't see any others. Every other face I saw in there was maskless.

I was somewhat annoyed by at least three different parties walking in late. The Woman King has a great opening action sequence, and none of them got to see it. I had to restrain myself from shouting, "You're late and you missed a great scene!"

I wound up way past my bedtime last night. I suspect Shobhit was disappointed we never got to connect on FaceTime, but in the short amount of time I had between getting home from work and leaving for Light Rail to the U District, I needed to make myself dinner as well as get through my daily reading budget of 34 pages with my library book—which I actually managed with surprising efficiency, barely meeting that goal while I was on the train. (I've been bringing my book to work so I can read during my lunch break; I read while eating dinner; I read while walking to the train; I read on the train. I even got two pages ahead while waiting for Tracy to arrive at the theater.)

Then, Tracy drove me home, and even though the movie started ostensibly at 7:00, it was after 10:00 by the time we were leaving in her car—the runtime of the film is 135 minutes, and that was after countless trailers preceding the movie. (It just occurred to me the late arrivals were likely timing it deliberately so they wouldn't have to sit through trailers, given that it's reserved seating, but a lot of them overestimated the time it would take for trailers to finish. You would think they would have underestimated that but whatever.) Then, predictably, we spent some time chatting in her car outside my building. It was nearly a quarter till 11:00 when I finally got out of the car and I was asleep at 10:51.

I'm actually glad the next time Tracy and I hang out, which will be Monday next week, we won't be seeing a movie—we're going out to dinner and then hanging out on Capitol Hill, which she's talked about wanting to do for a while. We love to talk so much, this should give us ample time to do so. It just occurred to me also, maybe we can do some of my Halloween costume shopping together. Shobhit gave me a gift card he still has for a return at Crossroads Trading, and even suggested I look for costume ideas there. I don't have high hopes but it's worth a look.

Incidentally, this morning I looked at my Google Calendar for next week and, although two of the days still need to be confirmed, I will potentially be hanging out with different people six days in a row. Sheesh! Two of them will be virtual (this month's Watch Party movie with Kwanteria will be on Tuesday and I'm hoping to do this week's Virtual Pumpkin Carving Party with Gabriel and Mandy the following weekend), but it's still a lot of social activity. And that'll be after Jennifer and Matthew stay the night on Friday! Oh my god. This just hit me! If Laney and I stick with our virtual Happy Hour this Friday, combining that with Jennifer's visit and the aforementioned social activity next week, I actually might be hanging out with different people each day for eight days in a row.

It seems that my social life has truly reached pre-pandemic levels.
