  • Sat, 13:59: #BirthWeek train #2! Lake Whatcom Railway steam locomotive, built 1907 (in New Hampshire, but at a place called … Mt. Washington!), operated in every decade of the 20th century. Until 2019 you could come for holiday scenic train rides but that was put on pause for the pandemic. They still opened the gates for us to come on our own and tour the train cars, which was very cool and special.

Some of the area has been filled in with gravel and dirt to an astonishing degree, leftover effects from flooding in the area last fall. Some of it made me think of the buried cars and buildings from Mt. St. Helens mudflow. Except in this case it’s buried railroads.

There was an older guy named Peter, a seasoned vet of the railroads who showed us around, but also a younger, local man named Joe, who is volunteering cleanup efforts in hopes of getting train rides operational again by summer. If they manage that, we’ll be back. https://t.co/klRY3lLZ94
