Last night I took myself to see the highly critically acclaimed French film Hold Me Tight. I thought it was fine. Solid B.

It was at the Uptown on Lower Queen Anne at 5:15. I rode my bike first to the Pacific Science Center box office, only to find that it closed at 4:00. What a pain in the ass. I've tried over and over to order a ticket for Friday to an IMAX showing of Moonage Daydream and it keeps giving me an error message even though there's nothing wrong with my credit card. I suppose it won't be the end of the world if I just buy a ticket the night of the 4:45 showing on Friday; I would bet a huge sum of money it won't be sold out. I'd still rather buy the ticket in advance, just in case. But, whatever.

It's wildfire smoke season these days in Seattle. It's not nearly as bad as it has been in recent years, but bad enough; I felt like I was literally breathing smoke when I rode my bike home after the movie ended last night. Blech. I'm also getting a little concerned about Leavenworth, which is in Central Washington—how smoky will it be there two weeks from now? The other day I added Leavenworth temporarily to the list of cities on my phone's Weather app, and the air quality there is bad.

I also noticed for the first time this year that Google Maps is identifying nearby wildfires. There's a "Bolt Creek Fire" in the Cascade Mountains that is 45 miles from here in Seattle, and 30 miles from Leavenworth. Shobhit was telling me Highway 2 is the better route from Seattle but it will likely be closed (a stretch of it is currently); Google Maps basically shows the travel time roughly equivalent between that and driving I-90. I can't even remember which route I drove when I went there for the day during the Family Vacation in 2020 (no wait, looks like I did take I-90), but if Highway 2 were open this time I would opt for that just for the scenic nature of it; I've taken I-90 a million times. I suppose now a lot of it will just be scorched. Who knows.

I'm just hoping the fire will be more under control, or the smoke blowing away rather than toward it, when we're actually in Leavenworth on the 26th. I just found some Leavenworth live webcams that show the air there not looking great, but not nearly as bad as it could be either. I guess we'll take what we can get.

It's been a fairly dry period for theatrical movie releases (September is only half over and I've seen all of two movies in a theater so far this month, only one of them an original release that I reviewed—the one I saw last night), but awards-bait season is getting closer, so fall movie releases that are more my jam are going to pick up the pace. I plan to see a movie both Friday and Saturday, and then one more midweek next week, before the weeklong trip to Idaho and Leavenworth starts the following Saturday, necessitating yet another break. By the time October gets here, I should reliably have one or two movies to see most weeks through the end of the year. I look forward to that.
