Thu, 17:22: A young man got on the bus and sat in the seat next to me, blaring 50 Cent from his phone out of a speaker. I only know it was 50 Cent because I saw it on his phone, particularly after he asked me if I liked the song, and then told me he would start it over for me.
This was after he leaned forward and silently looked back at me dead in the face, clearly aiming to steal the attention I was giving my book.
And then he said: “Can I get a hug?”
I chuckled nervously. “No, thanks.”
“Why not? Is it be because I’m Black?”
“No, it’s because I don’t know you.” (His lack of a face mask on the bus was also relevant.)
“So? I’m from Canada. We hug people.”
I suppose if I were more at ease with myself among strangers, I might have just gone ahead and hugged him. It was still an objectively weird ask, which I suspect he made knowingly.
He got off two stops later and I was relieved.
