For the first time in weeks, or at least for the first workday in weeks, I have very little to report. Shivi flew home yesterday morning, so I have nothing more about her visit to tell about.
Well, I guess I should take that back: I did spend a couple of hours last night working on my New Year's photo digest email, which this year was combined with an accounting of Shivi's visit—last year's "Happy New Year 2022" email, for instance, featured 15 photos, 6 of those of the Space Needle "augmented reality" fireworks show; 3 of them from the detour to Gabriel and Lea's house; and 3 of them from the New Year's family gathering at Dad and Sherri's house in Olympia. By contrast, this year's combined "Happy New Year / Shivi Visit 2023" email featured 19 photos (four more than last year), 4 of those of the drone-enhanced, in-person fireworks show at the Space Needle; only 2 of them from the New Year's Day family gathering; and 13 of them (just over two thirds) broadly focused on Shivi's 8-day visit with us.
Also, this morning, for the first time ever, I was compelled to follow up with everyone I sent it to with a typo correction. Later last night, Laney sent me this email in response:
Thanks for sharing this. So great that Shivi got to experience so much of what is wonderful about Seattle. Do you realize that you referred to Beth as Gina's sister? A fun typo!
Oh, for fuck's sake. A "fun typo"? I suppose, depending on how you look at it. But how many people on my distribution list know we just
not well enough to take that at face value? I don't want people thinking they are sisters! I don't care that most of these people likely gleaned right over it and it hardly matters to them. I still had to send this follow-up this morning:
CORRECTION!
I usually don't bother with sending corrections to typos, except this is a mistake I just can't live with: Beth is Gina's wife
, not her sister. That's a very different relationship!
Okay carry on.

Other than that, I came back out into the living room around 8:00 to spend about an hour watching two episodes from season 5 of
Night Court. Shobhit asked if I wanted to watch a third, and I said no—I was just so, so tired.
I had already had a poor night's sleep the night before thanks to the chai I drank at Saffron Grill on Tuesday. And then, when Shobhit got up at 4 a.m. to take Shivi to the airport, it woke me up, and it was practically impossible to get back to sleep. Had my environment been utterly silent and still, I am confident I would have gotten back to sleep relatively quickly. But with any distraction whatsoever, I was kept awake, and Shobhit has this bizarre habit of pacing around while he's brushing his teeth, including walking deep into the bedroom from the master bathroom—right by the bed. I was like, "Do you have to do that here?" and he wandered back into the bathroom. Still, I did not fall back asleep until both he and Shivi had left the condo.
My SleepCycle app says I was in bed that night for 6 hours and 53 minutes, and "asleep" (how it knows the distinction, I have no idea) for 5 hours and 28 minutes. Normally I can function just fine on that, but it was really the quality of the sleep that was the problem: the caffeine from the chai prevented me from sleeping very deeply during any part of that. As a result, I really zonked out early last night. Last night, by contrast, I was in bed a solid 8 hours—at least an hour more than usual—because I went to bed at 9:24; the app says I was "sleep" for 6 hours and 33 minutes of that. It gives a percentage "quality of sleep" each night, rating last night 87% as compared to the previous night's 65%. I do feel far better today than I did all day yesterday, sometimes fighting to stay awake even at work. I clearly made the right decision going to bed early last night.
That said, I never mentioned in yesterday's post that I had a dentist appointment in the morning, and since it's only a few blocks away and at 8:00, I set my alarm to go off half an hour later than usual yesterday morning. I forgot to reset it back for this morning, without which I would have gotten about half an hour less sleep last night—and I usually set it to wake me between 5 a.m. and 5:20 at the latest. This morning, it woke me at 5:24. So, I was much further behind than usual all morning.
I still grabbed a #8 that goes down Denny Way at 7:19, and was in the office at about 7:40ish. Nobody cares!
