cinema in the fall

Yesterday I took myself to see The Holdovers and I really loved it. Before seeing Anatomy of a Fall on Saturday, although I have given several films an A-minus, I had not given a solid A to any movie since A Thousand and One in April. I would still rank A Thousand and One my #1 movie of the year, but it's been a bit of a rush to have only given one other solid A all year, only two write two solid-A movie reviews in a row in just the past three days.

I love cinema in the fall!

Anyway, the showtime was at 5:25, which cut it barely too short for me to walk home first. I needed to return a book at the library anyway, so I walked to the Central Library, taking a series of photos that illustrated how much I love walking through the city after the first work day after Daylight Saving Time ends.

Don't get me started on Daylight Saving! People love to say they want to change the law so we never have to change the clocks anymore—but they only want to make Daylight Saving permanent, which requires Congressional approval. Well, guess what? Making Standard Time permanent is completely within our hands, no requirement for Congressional approval at all. But, these whiny bastards don't want to live in a world where it gets dark at 9:00 in June instead of at 10:00. If they're not willing to do the stunningly easy thing to do in order to do away with changing the time twice a year, these people need to shut the fuck up.

My walking route got me to the Regal Meridian at just the right time. I did double check AMC multiple times to make sure I wasn't making the same mistake I made last Friday with Priscilla—this time, Regal really was my only option. And I really wanted to see this movie. So, I forked over another extra $17.50 to see it.

Regal has these candy machines outside the screening rooms that I like to use, when I can, to burn through when I have too much change in my pocket. I've had too much change for too long. Among it were two quarters and one half-dollar coin that is useless in any change receptacle. I asked for change at consessions and they had to call the manager over to open the register. This killed several minutes. A little ridiculous, this fuss just for two quarters. But, it allowed me to get two crank-turns from a candy machine.

The peanut m&m's machine was out of order. Goddammit. I had to settle for Rese's Pieces.

I got into the theater right at the 5:25 showtime, and those fuckers at Regal continued playing product commercials for more than another five minutes. Ugh. AMC is so much better.

Also: no one else was in there yet, except one guy. Who was sitting in my reserved seat. What the hell? He was relatively polite about it. I wasn't about to just sigh and sit somewhere else, I deliberately chose that seat for its optimum location. The guy said his ticket was for a seat that turned out to be too close to the screen. He moved two seats over.

The movie's runtime was 130 minutes, and mind you, this was after the trailers finally finished, probably half an hour after published showtime. That's a good two hours and forty minutes in the theater, thus letting out at about 7:45. The next busses were way too long a wait at that point and I walked home, arriving just after 8:00.

I made myself a veggie burger for dinner. Shobhit had leftover noodles to eat when he got home from work around 9:30, when I was just finishing up the review. Then I went to bed.
