going back to fargo

Last night was the one evening I had all week without any plans or social engagements. Between my usual cadence of going to the movies and all the added holiday events I'm doing (the next one being tonight), my calendar is in full throttle already—but, last night was a nice evening chilling at home.

This gave Shobhit and me time to catch up on the first three episodes of season 5 of Fargo. There were two episodes on the premiere night last week, then episode three this week. Actually they air on FX every Wednesday and then are available on Hulu the next day, Thursday. So for all intents and purposes for us, the episodes come out on Thursday.

I had already seen references here and there to how good this new season is and how it'a a return to form, but damn, was it entertaining. Also arguably has the most direct references to the 1996 film of any of the seasons—although it's also set in the fall of 2019, making it the most contemporary of any season to date. (Season 1 was released in 2014 and set in 2007; season 2 released in 2015 and set in 1979; season 3 released in 2017 and set in 2010; and season 4 was released in 2020 and set in 1950.)

I'm kind of annoyed that it's mostly set in Minnesota, some in North Dakota, and it was shot in Calgary, though. There's a scene in a high-rise office with skyscrapers seen, slightly blurry, out the window in the background and I was like, "That is not Minneapolis."

Shobhit keeps thinking that some reference to covid will come up in this new season, being set in late 2019. But, the more I think about it, the more I doubt it. No one wants to see that, first of all. Plus, this new season starts in October 2019 and even if it ended in December that's plenty of time for a lot of story to unfold. Even by December covid-19 was barely making a dent in news cycles. It didn't start truly dominating the news until February. But, we'll see. I will indeed be interested in when the story ends, being so close to such a seismic zeitgeist shift.

I think each episode averaged around 40-45 minutes, so even though we watched all three, that still amounted to, at most, 135 minutes. I spent a fair amount of time after that reconstructing my Annie Lennox playlist, because I wanted to play it at Faith's but the previous version wasn't synced to my phone. And now it is. I'm getting really tired of having to rebuild those playlists.

Tonight is set to be the first social engagement with both Laney and Alexia together, which will be a new experience. They are two very different people and it's going to shift the dynamic a bit, but that's okay. They're probably not as different as I keep thinking of them as.

The event tonight is the Great Figgy Pudding Caroling Competition, which, judging by my photos history, I have only attended once before—in 2014. Nine years ago! Back then, it happened over by Westlake Center, but now they hold it at Pike Place Market. There's a lot less space there, so I don't really understand that change, but whatever. It's going to make it a lot more crowded.

I just checked my 2014 blog post about it, and was reminded that when I went then, I had no one to go with, and just went by myself. Well, this year will certainly be different: I'll be going with Laney and Alexia and Shobhit! I hope to get some good photos.

Tomorrow is yet another holiday event with Alexia, the Argosy Christmas Ship cruise, the one on this date launching from Renton on the south end of Lake Washington. The money I saved up all year for Christmas events mostly went toward this ticket, although a fair amount of the rest of it went to tickets to the Dina Martina show Laney and I will go to on Sunday the 17th.

Sunday will be quite an unusual anomaly for me, actually, as I'll be spending the afternoon that day with Gabriel and Andy. We're all going to Bellevue Square to get fitted for suits for Gabriel and Lea's wedding in May. So that should be, presumably, a memorable experience.
