the day after

Yesterday was a pretty standard day at work, although also standard for what Doug Benson likes to call the "holiday taint"—the week between Christmas and New Year's—which means few people at the office. In fact I looked at my Outlook calendar this morning and there's a cascade of calendar items indicating people out on PTO this week. Six people on my calendar alone, which means these are just people from my own department (Merchandising).

Of course, so many people work from home anyway, even this week hardly seems unusually sparse when it comes to people being physically at the office. Noah wasn't in the office yesterday, but he is today. All of the people marked as PTO on my calendar only come in to the office a few days a week; this just means they won't be reachable today.

The thing that truly set yesterday apart, at least slightly, was the amount of leftover holiday sweets left out in the kitchen. I partook in too much of them. My weight is down a little tiny bit today from yesterday, but I gained a couple of pounds over the holiday weekend.

I did leave work half an hour early, so I could take the bus downtown, then catch Light Rail to Northgate for my "contact lens fitting" appointment, so my prescription could be extended and I could order my next year's supply of contact lenses and use my $200 hardware benefit for 2023 before the year ends.

I learned today that my eye doctor is originally from Vancouver, B.C. I think I learned a year or two ago that he's gay, but today I learned he and his partner also have two kids. I told him, "Vancouver's my second favorite city?" Naturally he asked, "What's your first?" and I said, "The one we're in," at the very same time that he immediately correctly guessed, "Seattle."

I didn't get back home until about 6:00, but I still had time to make pizza for dinner, walk over to Trader Joe's for some garlic so Shobhit can try pickling some of the many chili peppers with which I stuffed his Christmas stocking, and get most of two loads of laundry done. There's just the second load still needing to be put away, but everything is clean and dry now.

I worked on some of my annual year-end projects otherwise. I got the draft done of my "2023 at PCC" email I'll be sending out on Friday, though I still need to duplicate it with html commands so I can then post it to my blog on Saturday. I have a lot of work left to do on my "2023 in Ten Minutes" video—at present I merely have the four minutes dedicated to Australia done, which I finished a couple of months ago—but I spent some time last night also working on my draft of my 10 favorite movies of the year post, which will get shared on Friday. My annual Book Log, which I keep up all throuh the year as I finish each book, will get posted tomorrow.

I've given up on my previously-annual "Top 20 audio" posts. I'm long since past being up on any current singers or bands whatsoever (unless you count Troye Sivan, which naturally you would), and my favorite podcasts never really change. Those posts have become pointless so I don't do them anymore. But I still do a year-end post every day for the last four days of the year: Book Log; Cinema Top Ten; Year at PCC; and Year in Ten Minutes video.

I have Action Movie Night tonight at the Braeburn, and I won't skip that. I also have a holiday movie night scheduled with Alexia Friday night. I was going to see a movie tomorrow night but now I'm leaning toward punting that one to next week, since I know it won't make it into my top 10. I need to make all the time I can to get all this stuff done.
