I have so much work to get done today, and it's being compressed from both ends: I am scheduled for my annual evaluation with Eric at 1:00, for which he blocked out ninety minutes rather than sixty—there's this new thing where evaluations involve coming up with a list of "goals" after which we track the success of achieving them over the coming year. To say I have mixed feelings about that is an understatement; I can see an element of wildly corporate bullshit about it, but can also see it actually being legitimately useful. At least depending on what we come up with.
I also didn't get to work until 9:20, though. I now, finally, have my permanent crown on my tooth on the lower left side of my mouth. I was relieved to find they did not need to administer more Novocain for this appointment, which was scheduled for 8:00 a.m.
The appointment wasn't nearly as long as the one two and a half weeks ago (18 days to be specific), in which they drilled out my former filling and then fitted me with a temporary crown. That temporary thing was somewhat awkward but I got used to it pretty quickly. They also cautioned me not to eat anything super sticky like caramel, and even that aside, told me it was possible for it to fall out. The dentist told me that if it fell out only a few days before today's appointment, it wouldn't be a big deal for me to just leave it until the appointment. Thankfully it never came to that.
And still, today's appointment was fairly involved—just not nearly as long, and no need for shots. I kind of marveled at how quickly they affixed the crown and bonded it, presumably forever? That part took a matter of minutes. What the hell do they use to bond a tooth crown, anyway? I meant to ask them and then forgot. I guess there are
several possibilities, so I have no idea what was used on my tooth today. I should have asked. Maybe I'll email them.

As for my evening last night, I took myself to see the latest M. Night Shyamalan film,
Knock at the Cabin, which was barely worth going to see: B-minus.
As I noted in the review, this was the first Shyamalan film I had gone to see in 17 years. The last one was
Lady in the Water, and that movie truly sucked. People have been liking his movies better in recent years, so I decided to finally give him another chance. The credit I'll give him is that at least this movie doesn't suck. It's just that it's not particularly great either.
I always like an opportunity to go to the movies, though. If there's anything people generally know about me, it's probably that.
The movie was at 5:00, and thankfully the run time was all of 100 minutes—perfect for this type of film. With trailers, I was there a solid two hours, getting home around 7:20. It was close to 9:00 before I was done, and this would have been done at least half an hour earlier, probably, if not for how slow my computer is and how often it freezes for up to thirty seconds or more, seemingly with every third fucking keystroke. One of these days I need to get online with an Apple Care agent to see if I can get any pointers for mitigating that. Shobhit always wants to insist that the problem is that I keep too many programs and tabs open, except I do the exact same thing on my work computer and never have the same problem. Also, when researching for movie reviews, I always need several tabs open for easy access to different types of information.
Anyway. Once that was done, we watched episode 5 of
Poker Face on Peacock, which I think even Shobhit would agree was easily the best episode of the series so far, terrible explosion special effects notwithstanding. What's not to love about a couple of elderly woman villains in a retirement home played by Judith Light and
Law & Order's S. Epatha Merkerson? There's a drag-down fight between them and Natasha Lyonne at the end of the episode that was alone worth making the entire episode.
