Birth Week Hidden Gem #5: Bainbridge Island, WA
5a: Bainbridge Island Japanese American Exclusion Memorial, a National Historic Site as part of the National Park Service (https://t.co/CpnT6TNwiY), a beautiful and solemn memorial to the first Japanese Americans to be forced into internment camps during World War II. A long wall lists the names of the 276 such people excluded from the island; sculpted silhouettes and footprints straddle the edge of the dock from which they were loaded onto a ferry; many strings of origami cranes were hung at regular intervals from the wall. Absolutely worth a visit, arguably more so than any other place on the island.
5b: "Frog Rock," which has apparently been painted to look like a frog since 1971 (bit.ly/3L2MnwI).
5c: Fay Bainbridge Park, with beautiful Puget Sound views, where Valerie and I sat on logs to eat our packed picnic lunches.
5d: Digital birthday card Valerie made for me using a photo she took of me at a family reunion in ... 2004.
5e: Bainbridge Ferry back to Seattle.
