Fri, 10:03: It doesn't matter how quickly the sign was taken down, or how far the incident was away from where I live. The political climate in Florida is only emboldening behavior like this, which can only spread beyond state lines the more emboldened the bigots are. This kind of thing happening in my country legitimately scares me.
And it is not lost on me how much more of a position of privilege I am in than trans people, or people of color, or immigrants—all of whom are being demonized, especially in Florida (and other red states). Consider what it's like for trans people of color. Hell, immigrant trans people of color. There are almost certainly more of them than you think, and every single one of them deserves protection.
And: the bigots are coming for me too. We can only work together to stop them, and telling people just to move out of the state is not the answer, as most of the affected communities, again, do not have that privilege. What needs to happen instead is the fascist bigots need to be stopped. Assuming the whole state is full of horrible people is a fatal mistake, especially when they are guilty of widespread voter suppression.
This is a chilling thing to see happening. I'd be less alarmed if it were an isolated incident, but anyone with two eyes in America today can see that it is not.
