Only Winning In the Heartwarmer

Exactly as had been intended, last night was just a chill evening at home with Shobhit, watching TV.

First, we watched the episode of season 3 of Only Murders In the Building that had been released yesterday on Hulu.

Then, we watched the two episodes I was already behind on with season 2 of Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty on HBO Max. Shobhit hadn't seen the first season but was still pretty engaged by these episodes, which really start their own story arc anyway. In fact, he remembered certain details about basketball history that I was surprised he knew at all. Sometimes it's odd the details of American ephemera—especially from before he moved here from India—that he absorbs and retains.

Up to that point, we'd already watched roughly three hours of television. After that I went to Netflix to start watching season 2 of Heartstopper. We only watched the first episode but I still really like it; that show is wonderfully sweet, about queer high school kids in the UK.

We technically could have watched a second episode of Heartstopper, but I prefer to get to bed at a decent time, and with it about 9:30 by this point, I waned to start getting ready for bed.

I really slept deeply last night, actually taking a few moments for my 5:15 alarm to pull me awake, which was unusual. Also I can't really account for it. We're in the midst of what is becoming an increasingly routine heat wave; we hit 93° on Monday, 95° yesterday, and barely past noon as I write this, it's already 81° with a forecast high of 87° today and tomorrow. Until this morning, we were recording lows around 70°, which is not far from our all-time warmest low temperature for any date (73°, set in 2021 during our "heat dome" event that also gave us our all-time hottest temperature of 108°).

What this means is, our nights have been kind of unbearably hot this week, but we are still too cheap to get the air conditioning that will only make our electricity bills skyrocket. (It's the cheapness more than anything for us, but air conditioning is also terrible for the environment, thereby compounding the problem leading to the need for it to begin with.) I'm ready for this heat to end just so I can stop sweating on top of my sheets in bed.

It's early yet so this could change, but I suppose I should "knock on wood"—at least thus far we haven't had significant wildfire smoke moving into the area.
