superior things

I went to a movie right after work yesterday with Tracy, and it was one I had already seen before: Poor Things. The really nice thing about this was that, having seen it already, I didn't have to write a review after I got home. This have me some time to read my library copy of MCU: The Reign of Marvel Studios, which is so overdue that if I don't return it by Saturday, they'll charge me the price of the book. So, I'm really hustling to get through the last couple hundred pages.

I did discover this morning, when I went to find the movie review link to add to my working 2024 movie log, that I had forgotten to add it to my 2023 movie log! Well, shit. I guess I watched a movie I reviewed 95 times last year, rather than 94. Still on the low side for my typical annual average, but, I'm okay with that. 95 is still a lot, an average of about two per week.

Anyway, Tracy was working from home yesterday but didn't have the time to come pick me up at the office, which was fine. I left at 4:00, caught a bus, and was at Pacific Place right around the showtime at 4:25. We still took some time for Tracy to order some concessions, which only meant that there were maybe one and a half trailers left to sit through once we sat down.

I heard on a podcast recently that Poor Things "lags a bit" on second viewing, but I'd say I enjoyed it just as much the second time around. It didn't have the same effect asa Yourgos Lanthimos's last film, The Favourite, which I seem to like more every time I see it, but at least with this one I still like it as much—and it doesn't diminish.

Tracy mentioned more than once how surprised she was by how much she liked the movie. Apparently she doesn't usually like Emma Stone, which I found odd. What's not to like? She also asserted that Emma Stone has had "extensive plastic surgery," which was news to me. Is she even right about that? Tracy likes to say this about a lot of actors. I suppose it could be true and I just don't pay all that much attention. Also: so what? She can do what she wants, and she looks good.

Tracy was actually supposed to join me the first time I went to see Poor Things, on December 14. She wound up texting me that very day that she wasn't "feeling well" and had to "cancel at the last minute." In what sense she wasn't feeling well—physical, mental—I didn't ask.

She did text me last night that she thought she was coming down with a cold. I told her I'd be wearing a mask, which I'd have been doing anyway. To her credit, she also wore a mask, although she removed it to eat her concessions and also seemed to get more congested as the movie went on. She blew her nose countless times. She seemed to feel fine otherwise, though, and as I noted, really enjoyed the movie.

I thought about declining the usual ride home, but we found ourselves going down to the parking garage together anyway, almost on autopilot. I kept my mask on in the car, as did she, with a few breaks during which she rolled her window down. I'm not particularly worried about it. I do have a double feature with Laney on Saturday though and with this in mind I'll probably take a covid test just as a precaution. My test supply is dwindling, though; right now I only have four left. Pretty soon I'm likely to have to actually buy some, for the first time ever. They've all been free up to this point, sent by the government, but that wasn't going to last forever and did last a long time.
