Laney and I went to see
Red One last night. It was a 5:00 showtime, so I walked straight to Pacific Place downtown after work. She walked down from her apartment on Broadway, and we met right at 5:00.
We went even though we already knew the movie's score on MetaCritic was 35, which is a pretty dreadful number. This is multiple times now that I've gone to a movie with a dismal MetaScore, thinking I might find something to like about it in spite of that—only to discover I really should have trusted that weighted average. This movie sucks so hard, it's (barely) even worse than
Borderlands.
There was a moment during the movie when I actually thought to myself,
Am I going to give this movie an F? Then, feeling magnanimous, I settled on a D+.
I had even woken up yesterday morning to a new episode of
The Big Picture podcast, and the episode description began with,
Is 'Red One' the Worst Movie of the Year? (Yes, it is.) I took a screenshot of that and texted Laney, who responded that she had very low expectations so maybe she'll be pleasantly surprised.
There is no question she enjoyed it more than I did. She seemed to have a moderately good time, while I found myself actively feeling contempt for the movie. After I posted the link to my review on
Facebook, Laney actually posted the comment:
oh, snap! Ok, I dislike it more now after reading this review 😂 But I still think the reindeer were cool, and the penguins and the polar bear and the weird sleigh that Krampus drove... but alas, cool moments do not a decent movie make.
Even I found a smattering of things charming in the movie. That's why I gave it a D+ instead of an F. A sprinkling of minor charms are meaningless when they do nothing for the movie in context.
I will say this: I really enjoyed writing the review.

Here in Seattle, it seems like all anyone can talk about is this "
bomb cyclone, which moved into the area last night.
I actually saw a post on Threads about how localized the winds can be, citing 38 mph winds at SeaTac while they were at 7 mph at the Tacoma Narrows Bridge. Of course I can't find the Thread now, and Threads's search function is utter garbage. Oh well.
The weather downtown Seattle was fine as I walked from work to the theater, not even rain. When Laney and I walked out of Pacific Place after the movie, there was a ton of fallen leaves from the trees on the sidewalk that had not been there before, but at that moment, the air was calm. There must have been some gusts during the movie.
Laney and I were going to catch a bus home, just in case, but when we saw there wasn't another bus for 10 minutes, we decided we might as well walk. Winds did pick up a bit as we walked, and it did start to rain lightly, but nothing major. Laney had her rain jacket hood and I had my umbrella, we were fine. Nor did I hear any wind gusts the rest of the night, or overnight, on Capitol Hill.
There have been some wild stories from other people this morning, though. I was asked by a woman whose name I can't remember in the kitchen this morning about how I fared last night, and when I said I was totally fine, she said, "At my house it was a shit show." Katie in Finance came in late this morning, talking about how long her commute took, and that in her area the power was out and as a result her kids' school was canceled today. I don't even know where that was. I guess there have been
a lot of power outages, but as per usual, being on Capitol Hill and in such close proximity to both downtown and First Hill hospitals, our power was fine. It takes either a lot, or something very localized (once it happened due to a blown transformer), to take the power out in our neighborhood.
