  • Tue, 08:47: Much is being made of the runtime for THE BRUTALIST, at 215 minutes (three hours, 35 minutes)—but that number *includes* the very old-school decision to add a 15-minute intermission in the middle, something I very much approve of.

    If you remove that 15-minute intermission, though, the movie is actually *playing* for 200 minutes (three hours, 20 minutes). That's actually *shorter* than 2019's THE IRISHMAN (209 minutes) or 2023's KILLERS OF THE FLOWER MOON (206 minutes), and merely 19 minutes longer than a movie as huge as 2019's AVENGERS: ENDGAME (181 minutes)—none of these movies were presented with an intermission. I rather wish they had been.

    I'd love it if this reignited a trend. We have not had a wide-release film with an intermission since GANDHI (191 minutes), which was released in 1982.
