Last night was Action Movie Night. It happened to be Shobhit's turn to choose this week. He chose The Fall Guy. Before the choice was revealed, I noted that Shobhit probably has the most eclectic history of movie choices out of anyone in the group, and Tony agreed after the movie was over. Why don't we go over his choices right now?

1/25/2023: Mojave, so-so crim thriller from 2015 starring Oscar Isaac
9/6/2023: Awaara, overlong (by American standards, anyway) classic 1951 Bollywood film that's a favorite of Shobhit's
1/24/2024: Casablanca, 1942 romance drama that is so great it earnes its status as an American classic
8/7/2024: School Ties, perfectly fine 1992 drama about antisemitism that Shobhit only chose because there was a male nude scene in it (which was definitively unsexy)
2/29/2025: The Fall Guy, recent action-romance starring Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt

Honestly, The Fall Guy could easily become the best choice for Shobhit ever to have made even forevermore: I can't think of any other movie with as neat a Venn diagram overlapping both Shobhit's romantic interests and the action-movie interests of the rest of the group. I actually wondered if anyone ever got bored last night during the movie, as there are long stretches that focus on the romantic comedy rather than on action. But, when the movie ended, I think it might have been Jake who said, "That movie certainly had a lot of action in it," or something to that effect. Multiple people commented on how good they thought it was.

My response was somewhat curious. Often I enjoy a movie that I have a middling review to more upon rewatch. That happened with Bullet Train, which I was patently unimpressed with in theaters and then rather enjoyed when it was chosen later for Action Movie Night (though still didn't change my rating). With The Fall Guy, though, my reaction the first time was kind of "meh," and it was essentially the same last night. I still think it's too long.

There was a somewhat smaller group than usual this week: eight of us, including Tony, Jake, Ben, Chris B, Chris G, Daniel, Shobhit and myself. Only three people actually brought food, which is also unusual: Jake brought fried chicken; Ben brought a pepperoni pizza; and Shobhit and I (I'm counting us as one because we brought only one dish) brought macaroni and cheese that Shobhit made with a bunch of sauteed vegetables added. It was pretty popular and nearly all eaten by the end of the night. Shobhit and I finished it off when we got back up to the condo afterward.

I made myself a hot buttered rum as my drink, which is going to be my cocktail of choice for these events for a while, given the two containers of batter Shobhit got me for Christmas. My weight was predictably up this morning, but only by a pound, so not bad all things considered.

There's not much else to report. I think I will take myself to a movie tonight, even though the only showtime option is 7 p.m. at Seattle Center and that was why I skipped it on Monday. But, it's set in Winnipeg and if I night visit there in August, I'd like to see the movie. (I suppose I should check if it was actually shot in Winnipeg . . . it was!)

I've got very little lined up in the way of weekend plans, actually. I don't know that there's even any notable movie releases happening. I'll have to look more into that. Shobhit and I do have the SAG Awards watch party at Central Cinema Sunday evening, so that's exciting at least.

SIFF is showing the Oscar Nominated Shorts, but honestly? Althouh sometimes there are gems in there, the nominated shorts on average tend to be kind of blah so I'm not all that invested in getting them all watched anymore. I just looked at my blog and it looks like I haven't bothered going to see them (and therefore reviewing them) since 2022. I think I'm good.
