    How do the police not understand that excessive force—and make no mistake, that’s what this is—only continues to make everything worse? Day after day after day? They go out of their way to prove the very necessity of these demonstrations, live streamed.

    Language matters. If you say, “It’s too bad about the few bad cops that killed black people, but the looting and rioting has to stop,” it prioritizes the supposed moral standing of the police over the *actual lives* of black people.

    Maybe from now on try it this way: “It’s too bad about the looting and rioting, but cops killing black people has to stop.”

    Only the second version in any way acknowledges that black lives matter.
