expanse of nominations
I'm not going to have a lot to tell you today, because so much of my evening last night was taken by my writing the requisite Oscar nominations analysis post. I really enjoyed writing it, but it did take a good chunk of time, about two and a half hours, to write. Granted, a good quarter of that was probably just getting all the links to reviews for any time a movie I reviewed was mentioned (which was most of them), but that's all part of the process.
A kind of cool thing, after I shared the link to social media, involved Barbara: she has once again taken to, at least occasionally, copy editing my reviews, where she will post a comment on my shared link on Facebook with typo corrections. She had several for this post, which I really appreciated. Barbara used to do this a lot more often, many years ago (I have been posting movie reviews online since 2004), but kind of fell off of it, especially after she took a pretty definitive break from Facebook after the 2016 election of President Fuckwit. She has more recently come back to Facebook in a big way—sharing other people's posts with such frequency that at one point she got flagged, probably because Facebook algorithms thought she might be spamming—and thus also come back to these typo corrections for me.
She also said she really enjoyed reading the post, so that was nice. I don't often get that kind of direct response to my blog posts.
Anyway, my work on the Oscar nominations was roughly between 6:00 and 8:30; prior to that, I went to the office to swap out paperwork. Shobhit had a later shift and I didn't want to have to drive down later in the evening, and the weather was dry, so for the second time this year, I rode my bike. It was sunny and nice, but not especially warm: about 45°. That's a bit chillier than I prefer for bike rides, but still not terrible, especially under sunshine, so I managed. It was just the riding back up the hill that was the challenge, as is always the case when first returning to cycling in the spring.
After Shobhit got home, we watched the second episode of the first season of The Expanse on Amazon Prime, which Alexia had kind of raved about on our walk on Saturday so I decided to give it a try. I feel like the jury is still kind of out on this one, especially after a plot point that was not intended to be funny but it was so dumb I laughed out loud. It has a lot of potential though, and I saw that critical consensus increased significantly with later seasons, starting as early as season 2—so maybe once we get through this one, it won't be quite as dumb. We'll see.
