Mon, 10:10: This one's for my Olympia family and friends! I just happened to notice this there yesterday driving by: "Views on Fifth," the new name of the building re-opened as a residential complex just within the last year, along Capitol Lake. (tinyurl.com/2myhc585) https://t.co/RVIvwzARaQ
This building, originally constructed in 1966 at nine floors and 130 ft in height, opened as the Capitol Center Building. It used to be home to state government agencies, before it sat vacant for more than a decade. (tinyurl.com/abnh2jzn)
According to the caption on a photo I took of the building in 2011 (tinyurl.com/m9ek7mmx)—at the time it was vacant—Gina once lived in it, which would suggest it was residential another time before?? Perhaps Gina can comment with confirmation or clarification.
Anyway, the building—Olympia's third-tallest, after the State Capitol and St. Peter Hospital—was apparently long hated by many in the local community, as it blocks what otherwise would be a much better view of Puget Sound from the Capitol Grounds. (And indeed, from within the building, there would be great views of the Capitol itself across Capitol Lake from its south side, and of Budd Inlet of Puget Sound from its north side.)
Side note: that new, giant art installation along the north facade of the building is by local Indigenous artist Joe Seymour. (https://tinyurl.com/jaffx9pp)
The photos included here were both taken by me: the newer one just yesterday; the other—the only other shot I could find in my archives of the same, north side of the building—in 2004.
