  • Wed, 07:32: I keep overhearing news at work about this situation getting worse and worse. A lot of people hoping for a Thanksgiving turkey this year are going to be disappointed. What a great time to be a vegetarian! https://t.co/oy4Hs9euR3
  • Wed, 08:17: Hooray for Permanent-Standard-Time propaganda! It boggles my mind that people bitch and whine and moan and complain about the time changes twice a year, and still ignore the easy solution: make *Standard Time* permanent, which by the way, DOES NOT REQUIRE CONGRESSIONAL APPROVAL.

Instead, everyone is slavishly devoted to making Daylight Saving Time permanent, which the U.S. Senate voted for six months ago but the House has been ignoring all along. People are so married to the fantasy of an "extra hour" in the summer, the end result is nothing having changed at all, nor is it likely to.

And by the way? Not only would making Standard Time permanent instead solve those twice-yearly frustrations, but it's literally the healthier choice for everyone. I have long felt that daylight lasting clear until 10 p.m. in June never felt natural; I had no idea I had biological data to back that up: it actually fucks with our circadian rhythms:

"This sudden one-hour shift each spring has been associated with more heart attacks and strokes. Automobile and other types of accidents also increase."

    and

"Staying in daylight saving time year round could put people at greater risk for seasonal depression in the winter months [when it will stay dark an hour later every morning than it even does now, making your desire to stay asleep even greater], experts say. Experts also say circadian misalignment can affect the production of important hormones such as melatonin."

By the way, a switch to permanent DST was already tried once, in 1974, apparently too long ago for anyone to remember: it was quickly reversed, within a year, after everyone discovered they couldn't handle that extra hour of dark winter mornings after all. I am convinced that's exactly what would happen again now. Which, again, would not even factor in as a problem if we just went for making Standard Time permanent instead.
