Bit of a downtime last night: no movies, no outings, just going straight home and spending the evening there. Shobhit did come to pick me up so it would be easier to take home several Tasty Bite Indian meal samples. He made stuffed bell peppers and a garbanzo bean / lentil dish for dinner. I just had half a bell pepper, which I ate while watching Joel Kim Booster's Netflix comedy special. It was okay. It felt a bit unpolished.
Shobhit had his monthly board meeting for the Braeburn Condos in the meantime, held over Zoom as usual. They got a lot of information about the fire alarm that had gone off earlier in the day, when Shobhit left the building without taking the cats. This was really just laziness on his part, but I should really start making the cat carrier a lot more accessible for emergency situations. It's tucked in a spot in the primary bedroom closet, and with stuff piled on top of it. Now that I think about it, now that we have no roommate, I should just put the carrier in the guest bedroom closet, where it will be very easy to grab in situations like this.
There wasn't a fire. But, it wasn't a false alarm either: a unit owner in E705 had hired painters to pain the walls, and one of them apparently hit a sprinkler with their ladder, setting it off. This set off the fire alarm, but in the meantime soaked every unit from E705 down to E305. "From what [Mike] Fleming told me 605 is trashed," Alexia texted me—the gay couple who are both named Mike live next door to her on the other side, in E405—and then, "505 likely similar. Mike was home. He was catching water in buckets and dumping it in the sink. It would have been worse if he was at his office." The two of them have moved in the meantime out to their second home on Whidbey Island.
I texted Alexia to see if her unit had been affected at all, since she is right next door. Luckily she wasn’t. That could have been any of us, though. What if someone in E703 had done this? Then it would have been our unit, as well as those above and at least one or two below us, with a ton of water damage. I guess the unit owner of E705 has insurance that will pay for all of it, although who knows what kinds of irreplaceable things may have been damaged in four or five people's units.
So, we got all filled in with those details, and once Shobhit's meeting was done, we watched Sunday night's episode of
Westworld on HBO Max. Shobhit kept falling asleep.

Another thing I did last night was confer a bit with both Sara, whose place I'll be staying at in Denver this weekend, and Alice, the woman I went to high school with who lives there and will be meeting me for lunch right after I arrive on Saturday. Much like when I went to Louisville, I will have to be up at an unholy early hour to catch the early flight out at 7:48—this means I'll need to set my alarm for probably 4 a.m., if not earlier, although this time Shobhit might give me a ride. I wouldn't begrudge him not giving me a ride, though; he'd have to get up by about 5:00 to do that. But, you know, maybe. In any case, it gives me extra time at my destination the day I arrive, in sharp contrast to when I went to Louisville, when I had to layover in Charlotte
and I was moving three time zones away, so I didn't arrive until quite-late evening. In this case I have a direct flight and am only shifting one time zone, so it'll be still late morning when I land, and probably very early afternoon when I pick up my rental car.
Speaking of which! I price checked the rental car through Costco Travel again, and was able to rebook it for a far lower price. Three days were coming in at a cost of $406.50 previously. That's been canceled and as of yesterday I was able to rebook for $261.99. A stark difference. That doesn't count the body coverage I'll need to add, but that's okay. (I am also still bracing myself for steep gasoline prices.)
Anyway, I was texting with Sara, first about the forecast there, which is too hot: highs in the 90s every day I'm there. Dammit! Better than rain every day, I suppose. Maybe. And when I showed Sara the
that exciting, although I suppose grass as far as the horizon might be cool. Especially if it's green, which I don't really much expect in July.
In any case, I've already got an action-packed weekend planned. Travel and lunch with Alice on Saturday, and hopefully one or two other Denver area points of interest that late afternoon and evening. Sara suggested we go to Boulder on Sunday, which I thought was a great idea. Day trip to Cheyenne, Wyoming on Monday. And my flight leaves early evening on Monday, so I intend to return the rental car early (it has to be back by 12:30 regardless), then take the train back into downtown Denver to hang out for a few hours, instead of just hanging out at the airport for five hours. Oh, I do need to look into what I can do with my suitcase though, if I don't want to be lugging it around with me all those hours.
