Thu, 10:35: City People’s announces final growing season as one of Seattle’s longest running land use battles will end with 2024 start on Madison Valley PCC redevelopment
This is fascinating, to get this news from a local media outlet (and given a heads up on this article by a coworker here at the office) rather than any official internal announcement. I know our CEO is currently attending to a family matter in India so that may be a factor.
The Madison Valley store was first announced in 2016 with a projected opening date of 2018. Then these "Save Madison Valley" NIMBY activists successfully bogged down the process with such significant delays that we have opened *seven* other new stores (five in new locations, another two new stores replacing old ones in either the same location or the same neighborhood), and although it was always known this development would come to fruition eventually, they still managed to cause a delay of seven years: the new building will likely open in 2025.
I was so excited about this store when I first heard about it, because it'll be only 1.1 miles from my home. But! In 2016, I also had no idea we'd eventually get new stores both in the Central District (0.7 miles away) and Downtown (1.4 miles from home but only two blocks off my commute to and from work); Madison Valley is in the opposite direction and really won't mean much to me as a shopper anymore.
Except, of course, that it will bring our store count up to 17, assuming no other new stores open before then (please, God). I also had no idea back in 2016 how much rapid growth would come in the next six years and, in my opinion, become the source of a lot of the issues and frustrations we face as a co-op today. All the Madison Store really means to me now is it'll add yet another POS person to send me way too many emails every day.
Also, this is the site of City People's Garden Store, beloved by many and even Shobhit now shops there regular. And they're now finally, officially closing at the end of the year, which is going to be a bummer for a lot of people. https://t.co/T7n2ra04TB
