It was just another evening at home watching what we used to call, back in the 20th century, "the boob tube." Someone should come up with an equivalent term for the Internet. The fool tool? Not specific enough. The twit net? Doesn't really rhyme.
Shobhit was watching
Moneyball on cable when I got home. I reheated leftover pizza from the night before.
I had learned of a new movie that had "dropped" from the
Keep It podcast, called
Red, White & Royal Blue. I guess it was actually released on Prime Video last Friday, but based on the podcast discussion, I knew Shobhit would be happy to watch it with me. It's about the son of the (fictional) American President having an affair with a (fictional) British prince.
Plenty of it was, predictably, cringe-worthy. To call it a sanitized fantasy would be an understatement—but how great is it that the gays are now getting sanitized fantasies? Parts of it were too dumb for words, and parts of it really moved me. Some of it as genuinely clever and funny, and some of it was legitimately sexy. It was as though Amazon just stole the playbook from the Hallmark Channel, only slightly less corny overall. "Slightly" being the operative word there.
I had to
post about it after the movie ended. I feel compelled to repeat what I posted here:
I just watched “Red, White & Royal Blue” on Prime Video, and it’s the most utterly ridiculous, cornball Hallmark Movie-style shit imaginable … which I loved watching. I cried a few times. If that movie had been about a straight couple I wouldn’t have given one half a shit about it. But, living in a world where we’re getting mainstreamed, queer versions of even the dumbest stuff is a beautiful thing.

After that we watched this week's episode of
Reservation Dogs, in which not a whole lot happened, it was kind of more of a 23-minute mood piece. The final shot was during the credits and turned into a hilarious outtake.
And then I took us back to Netflix, for episode 2 of season 2 of
Heartstopper. Stil a saccarine sweet show that I really enjoy.
I just realized we made the rounds to three different streamers last night: Prime Video; Hulu; Netflix. There's a lot of news recently about subscription prices planned to go up, which is annoying when I budget for the next year's payment to, say, Disney+ based on what I paid last time. I need to reconsider that. Or, reconsider continuing to pay for that service. That said,
Andor alone was worth the price this year. At least Netflix is monthly. Hulu is too, but I use Laney's account for that. I know they're also looking to crack down on password sharing so we'll see how that works out. It's pretty obvious that bundling is the future of streaming and in the end it's just going to be basically the same as paying for a cable package.
