It's been a stressful couple of weeks at work, due to
certain things I can't really talk about extensively here. I will just say this: I was presented with a hypothetical scenario, with management drawing up pretty detailed contingency plans, that put me in a position where I might have a true moral conundrum on my hands. The kind of thing that, depending on what I decided to do, could have even had the potential to put my job at risk. Maybe not immediately, but potentially down the line. It was a real "what's the right thing to do" kind of thing, and it was difficult to gauge, but I still felt prett stronly about the side of that divide I was leaning on.
Nothing is set in stone, but we got word this morning that, tentatively at least, an agreement was reached. It was a huge relief, and indicates that we are far less likely now, to wind up dealing with the kind of disruption to our daily work lives we have not seen since the early days of the pandemic. (Honestly, if the worst-case scenario were to occur, this would alter my work life, at least temporarily, significantly
more than covid did—and covid had most of us office workers working from home for a year or more.)
I was imagining scenarios that would veer close to showdowns, of sorts. I'm so glad that I'm now not likely to be put into such a position.
Friday was a significant date in all of this. That web page was updated late that night, to reflect what had occurred that day—a very quick update. Yesterday was a return to negotiations, and by this morning the page had not yet been updated. I said to Noah when I came in, "So is this a case of no news is good news?" and Noah basically replied with, "Fingers crossed!"
Gabby and Amy and I had our weekly team meeting this morning and we discussed this a bit. I admitted that I haven't felt this kind of anxiety about stuff happening at work since covid, and setting covid aside, not for truly twenty years.
The meeting was in the small-ish conference room that's directly to the right of my desk, with its windowed walls making it easy to look in. Gabby and a few others were having another meeting in there when the email came in with the update about a tentative agreement. I immediately looked over to see if they were all reacting to having seen it themselves yet, and I really couldn't tell. Gabby and I chatted shortly after that meeting though, and they did all see the news while in their own meeting.
Shobhit was feeling pretty confident about it last night, when I was headed for bed but I told him how anxious I was about work. "They'll come to a solution," he said. I kind of thought,
What the fuck do you know?—he doesn't even work here—but, it's looking like he was right. We really can't afford the alternative we were facing, no matter what detailed contingency plans were deawn up. It would have been a multi-tiered, horribly public, unmitigated disaster.
So, you know, it's always nice to avoid that.

Beyond all that, I walked home from work yesterday, reading my library book for maybe a third of the way. I thought about listening to music the rest of the way during dusk, but I had so much to think about that I quite easily just walked home without any audio stimulation. Walking home without either reading or listening to something on my AirPods is something I very, very rarely do.
We were supposed to go to the Central District store to get more Blue Diamond Almond Breeze that was on sale. We both completely forgot.
Shobhit already had pasta sauce ready, which I bet he made early just so he could make it so much more watery than I like it. It figures! It still tasted good with the butternut squash ravioli from Costco that we made to have with it.
We then proceeded to spend the evening watching three episodes of
Fellow Travelers on Showtime. I was only able to do this because Laney switched her add-ons from Prime Video to her Hulu account, only the latter of which does she share the account with me. This meant I now have access, although bizarrely, the add-ons don't work via the Hulu app on the TV. We could only watch the show on the TV by using the Apple TV box to screen mirror the show playing from my phone. It's amazing how technology that should be simple really finds ways to complicate things.
