Last night was Action Movie Night at the Braeburn Condos theater. Shobhit didn't make it because he had a rehearsal to go to, but he still made a pasta dish (which I helped prepare) for me to bring. And even without him, there were were 10 people: Tony, Jake, Ben, Ryan, Chris B, Chris's cousin Tom (a new attendee), Joe, Derek, Andy, and myself. The newer guy, who was pretty accurately referred to last night as "Awkward Guy," did not show up, even though he's been pretty consistent for a couple of months. I'm not sure what happened to him; he didn't even respond to the weekly email Tony sends out to indicate who's in this week.

It was supposed to by Ulysses's turn to choose the movie, but his attendance has always been spotty and apparently he travels a lot. He didn't make it last night, so the choice fell to the backup—whose turn it otherwise would have been next time—Chris B.

I always like to check the movie history, particularly of the current chooser's previous films. Chris's history has been kind of hit and miss in my opinion, but leaning slightly toward the hits.

This week's choice was a movie I liked a lot when it came out, and is mostly good on rewatch, if far shorter on surprises: 10 Cloverfield Lane. I remembered that most of the film takes place with only three characters in a bunker, so I thought I knew what to expect when Chris started the streamer from his laptop and I caught a glimpse of the title. I had completely forgotten, though, that the movie begins with the young woman, who is the main character, packing a suitcase and fleeing her apartment in New Orleans. So then for a few minutes I wondered if I had seen the title correctly.

Well, I did: she gets in a car accident and then wakes up in a bunker room, being nursed back to health by a crackpot character played by an excellent John Goodman.

Anyway. It passed the time. It was fairly entertaining. Even more entertaining was a discussion that came up before the movie about the sementic uses of the phrase "stick pussy," which is apparently a name a coworker regularly calls Ryan. Something tells me that HR is not a department with much of a stronghold at car dealerships.

Shobhit was back from his rehearsal before my movie was over, but we finished early enough for Shobhit and me to watch this week's episode of Slow Horses. Shobhit was so pleased with his own creation that he ate quite a bit of what was left of the pasta (maybe half of it), even though food had already been provided at his rehearsal. I don't know of what sort, though.

There's a big "store leadership" meeting here at the office most of the day today. Noah and Frank had a half-hour presentation scheduled for 11:30, but because the meeting was running ahead of schedule, they were called in around 10:45.

Gabby is sitting in on the meeting all day, and she invited me to come in during the Grocery presentation. I was ambivalent about it. I asked Noah and Frank if they thought it would be useful to me, and they both seemed pretty indifferent to the idea. I decided, okay, I'll join, and if I find it pointless I just won't ever do that again.

"Pointless" is a strong word, but I can't say it was all that illuminating with information I either needed or did not already know. It was good to get a reminder of certain great promotions happening in November, though, that will be useful to me as a shopper. It made me think about how often I do my job just keying numbers and not necessarily thinking about their broader context. Too much of my job is about numbers for me to think that broadly about every single one of the ten thousand skus we have in Grocery.

I am hoping I can eventually partake in some of the free food they're being provided though. Keep your fingers crossed for me.
