Fri, 08:08: Everyone under the sun is talking about this Chappell Roan (largely because of recent fan dipshittery in response to her stated, and quite reasonable, personal boundaries), so finally this morning I decided to give her album a listen. Now, I still have yet to see any video footage of her, and her album cover is my first introduction to anything visual about her—I'm sure this will inevitably change soon enough—so truly all I have to go on at this moment is the music itself. I'm digging it, and to me she sounds like a pretty even mix of early Katy Perry and Kesha.
Of course, that's because I am old and my references are hopelessly dated (I'm so old that referring to Katy Perry or Kesha as "dated" is honestly depressing). I actually googled "similar artists" to Chappell Roan and got all these hits with endless lists of other artists I have never heard of. The fact that I have now heard of Chappell Roan AT ALL is an indicator that she must be getting wildly famous.
I do love her frank openness and celebration of queerness, though—and while I have learned this is a part of her stage performances (with drag queens as opening acts, I learned this on Wikipedia!), I am still referring just to the music itself. This alone gives her the edge in my book.
